I think it is close. 

I need the group name as it is put into the isMemberOf attribute on a
person record to be modified. The actual group name for the group record
in LDAP is not modified.

But the example you give follows the spirit of what I need to do with
PSPNG, so if something similar were to become possible with the person record
attributes that would meet my need.
