Does the firstlastfilter search include a wildcard in the first name? The 
autocompletion search in the Add member textfield doesn't include it in its 
partial name search, as it assumes the query in sources.xml already has a 
wildcard. As soon as you type the comma, the search will switch from the 
"filter" to the "firstlastfilter" search. The %FIRST% value will be 
everything after the comma, which will be blank right after typing in the 
comma.

For example, the sample ldap.sources.xml.example has:

       <searchType>search</searchType>
         <param>
            <param-name>filter</param-name>
            
<param-value>(&amp;(|(uwNetID=%TERM%)(sn=%TERM%))(uwNetId=*)(objectclass=uwPerson)))</param-value>
