Yes and no –

a.       my subject source is the same LDAP server that I’m trying to update with the new group

b.      my subject_id is a unique number and is NOT the same the rdn attribute

Is your subject source for grouper the same LDAP server?  Is you subject_id in grouper the same as the rdn attribute in LDAP?
