This is about the 2.2 upgrade.  For upgrades, we always document a preferred approach that usually invovles running a script to generate some SQL, executing the SQL, then possibly running a GSH script to finish the upgrade.  However, although not necessarily recommended, in the past it has usually been possible to upgrade by doing an XML export of the old version and then doing an XML import into the new version.

For the 2.2 upgrade, XML export and import won't work as an upgrade method because of the way legacy attributes have to be migrated and changes in the way that data is stored in the database.  But we will still document a preferred upgrade approach that will be similar to previous upgrades.  And XML export/import will still work from one 2.2 deployment to another.  This only affects the actual upgrade procedure.  If you have any concerns, let me know.
