And click on the request object on non lite:

Then click on WsGroupToSave:

And you see: createParentStemsIfNotExist

So if you are using non-lite, the answer is yes.   I added a jira to add this 
to the lite services, not sure when that will happen though...

Is it possible to auto-create a stem for a new group when using web services?

The functionality is available in Group.saveGroup with the
createParentStemsIfNotExist parameter but I'm not sure If I can use it
via web services (or how).
