If I'm following correctly, deleting that membership would have caused 
475K group set deletions, which probably explains the slow response 
time.  I think there's room for improvement in how we delete those 475K 
rows which we can add to 2.0 (and 1.6.2 if released) that might reduce 
the time.  I'll do some performance testing and let you know.
