This looks good. From a UI perspective it would allow a Struts action to initiate a transaction encompassing any number of API calls. Would it make sense to have a `helper` class + methods to manage transactions and `shield` clients from the Hibernate API?

Do you have any thoughts on whether the various HQL queries should be `hardcoded` vs in a mapping file as named queries?

Finally, should caching be thrown into this mix?
