I just started my training env and it worked fine.  It takes a couple minutes after starting the “gte” for the browser to be able to respond, so be patient.  If you cant get it up and running, post on slack or email or arrive a little early (840 in chair?) and lots of people will be there to help sort you out.

Also, if you can plan to reserve a couple hours after training on tuesday we will go somewhere and be social as group, going to a happy hour and dinner.  This is a time we can relax and ask questions about access management or other IAM topics in an informal setting and make connections with peers in other higher ed institutions.  This is not part of the training but is a fun and interesting opportunity.  If anyone has suggestions about where to go that would be nice 😊   (maybe osteria?)

Before You Arrive and Workshop Virtual Machines

Suggested Reading

If you haven’t already perused the Grouper wiki, there are many resources available to assist in our training preparation, such as the Grouper Deployment Guide.

Virtual Machines

You will need to have either PuTTY client (for Windows) or SSH client (for Linux/Mac) and a web browser such as Chrome or Firefox. The training makes use of Virtual Machines (VMs), in this case derived from Amazon Marketplace Images (AMI) loaded on Amazon Web Services. please review Connecting to the AWS Training Environment and the Command Line Jumpstart for the GTE.

The virtual machines for the upcoming Grouper Training will be available by the end of the day. Prior to the training, please follow the steps below to verify that you can access your virtual machine and that it is working correctly:

  1. Check the Student User Accounts list to get the IP address, username, and password for the available virtual machines. Choose a machine that has a blank entry for the “Assigned To…” field. Put your name into this field. This will be your machine for the training.
  2. Follow the directions in Connecting to the AWS Training Environment to your VM and review the Command Line Jumpstart for the GTE.
  3. Start the RabbitMQ docker image: ./

Example output:

[student@ip-172-31-39-11 ~]$ ./

Restarting RabbitMQ

4.            Start exercise 101.1.1: ./gte 101.1.1

You should see a long string of numbers and letters.

5.            Verify that GTE container is running: docker logs 101.1.1

6.            Navigate to https://localhost:8443/grouper/  and log in with banderson/password.

Note, you may need to allow a few minutes for Grouper to fully start before this link will work.

7.            You should see the Grouper UI

OBTAIN YOUR NAME BADGE and other important meeting materials outside the training room, which opens at 8:30 a.m. Please allow enough time to check in, browse the beverages, and get your laptop up and running. We will start promptly at 9:00 a.m.

We’re a friendly bunch - CASUAL ATTIRE is suggested.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES: Coffee, tea, soft drinks and water will be available at check-in, along with a light breakfast. Lunch is provided as part of your registration and there will be an afternoon snack break, as well. You will NOT go home hungry.

If you have any questions about the workshop or its technical content, please send a note to . You can also use the Slack channel named grouper-temple for an even faster response. :)

We are looking forward to seeing you in Philadelphia!
