Internet2 Community to Gather at Fall 2010 Internet2 Member Meeting
The Fall 2010 Internet2 Member Meeting is less than a week away! When our community comes together for our annual Fall meeting, sessions will highlight the Internet2 community’s progress in assembling critical pieces of the advanced research and education networking puzzle: cyberinfrastructure, federations, middleware, network engineering, security, teaching and learning, and emerging technologies that continue to expand the bounds of research and education. Thanks to the outstanding job done by the Program Committee, this year’s meeting will reflect current areas of focus in the research and education community, serving up 70 track sessions, over 72 side meetings, 15 poster sessions (including several student posters), 9 demonstrations, and 3 workshops that address networking issues critical to researchers, educators, students and industry.
General Sessions to offer Community and National Perspectives on Advanced R&E Networking
First General Session, Tuesday, November 2, 10:30-11:45AM: The first General Session will feature H. David Lambert, recently named Internet2’s president and CEO. Lambert will describe how the forces and opportunities facing today’s research and education community are aligning Internet2’s vision and mapping its path forward.
Second General Session, Thursday, November 4, 8:30-10:00AM: Internet2 welcomes Lawrence Strickling and Lev Gonick as speakers at the second General Session. Strickling is the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information, and Administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). Gonick, CIO and vice president at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, will spotlight his university’s visionary “Case Connection Zone” project, which is bringing gigabit fiber connections to underserved and impoverished Cleveland neighborhoods. Open Governance Meetings
Attendees will again have the opportunity to see the councils in action. AOAC, AMSAC, ERAC, and RAC welcome your interest and participation. These open meetings will take place on Monday, November 1 from 2:15 - 3:00 PM. Following the open council sessions, governance leaders will convene an open meeting from 3:15 - 4:00 PM to provide an update of activities to all council members and meeting attendees. Featured at the Fall 2010 Member Meeting
Internet2 would like to highlight a few features of the Fall 2010 Member Meeting.
- Focus on Federations Track: A new track focusing on Federations has been added to this meeting. These sessions will explore advanced R&E network projects, initiatives and activities that involve federal agencies, and their partnerships with research and education.
- BTOP Sessions: There will be several BTOP awardee presentations including two from regional connector members, Merit and OARnet, who will share project design and implementation plans. In addition there will be three panels; two with representatives from regional connector who are BTOP award partners and one panel comprised of organizations that have won major BTOP awards without regional connector member participation. Finally, there will be a community discussion session focused on BTOP and US UCAN. Please look at the online program for details for all of these BTOP track sessions.
- eduroam: Following a pilot at the 2010 Spring Member Meeting, wireless access will again be available utilizing your existing eduroam credentials. Additional details will be available at the meeting.
- Demonstrations: Nine advanced networking demonstrations will be featured at this meeting. Be sure to stop by the Habersham Ballroom during one of the scheduled demo times on Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Remote Participation: This year in addition to netcasting, Internet2 will be providing remote participation capabilities on a pilot basis for select sessions. Through a partnership with Vidyo, users with a webcam-equipped computer will be able to not only view sessions, but ask questions and participate in discussions in real time. Instructions on how to participate will be available online. Please note, participants are required to connect to a test room before connecting to a live session, and sessions will be locked after they begin to avoid disruptions.

New to Internet2 or Attending Your First Member Meeting?
If your organization has just joined Internet2, or this is your first Internet2 Member Meeting, there are a number of sessions and activities that you may find helpful in getting to know our community, and learning about Internet2. The Internet2 Overview: Engagement, Network and Services session provides a basic overview of Internet2, covering the concepts and terminology in advanced network services, middleware and applications. It will also provide information to help attendees understand how to engage with the Internet2 community, with a focus on current projects, initiatives and working groups. The session will also include information about a variety of services that are available to the Internet2 membership and community. Also consider attending the Internet2 Network, Services and Operations Update session to learn about current and upcoming service offerings, and the Internet2 R&D Update to learn about development efforts and projects as well as recently awarded grants.
InCommon Updates
Two InCommon Forums, three netcasts, and updates on a number of InCommon services highlight the Focus on Federations track at the Internet2 Fall Member Meeting. The participant-driven InCommon Forum has been split into a technical forum and a policy forum this year and other sessions will provide updates on the InCommon Cert Service, plans for federated wireless, and progress toward the Silver level of assurance. Other presentations will look at international interfederation efforts and interest in federations at many levels-–from state-based to research labs and facilities.
Three federation sessions will be available via netcast, including the InCommon Forum - Policy session, case studies from state networks on cloud services, and a look at Federations All the Way Down.
Industry Membership Activities
Industry members are invited to the Member Meeting Industry Forum on Monday afternoon. The forum meets twice a year to share information with fellow Industry Members at the Spring and Fall Member Meetings. This event is an excellent opportunity to connect with industry leaders and to interact with Internet2 staff. Industry members are critical participants in Member Meeting Poster Sessions and the Program Committee, in addition to presenting and serving on panels in a wide variety of track sessions. International Community Activities
There are many sessions for Member Meeting attendees that focus on the international networking community. The majority of these are scheduled Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, October 31-November 2. A complete listing is available online.
Sunday afternoon's session will include welcome remarks from Internet2 CEO, David Lambert, and focus on international partnership work in public health, advances in medicine and tele-surgery, extending the Reach of NRENs to primary and secondary schools and libraries, and a case study of mobile broadband and applications in Brazil. Monday's sessions will cover the regional interest groups from South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the Caribbean, with a summary and presentations Tuesday afternoon by Chair of the regional interest groups, Dale Smith, University of Oregon. Finally, Ana Preston Hunsinger, Internet2, will host a session comparing and contrasting the changes occurring among NRENs around the world, exploring the transformative nature of NRENs and also the transitional points and challenges that many NRENs face. A panel of NREN leaders will share their experiences.

Call for Program Committee Participation
The Internet2 Member Meeting provides many opportunities for the exchange of information about new and on-going work in the member community. These opportunities are created by the work of the Internet2 Member Meeting Program Committee, which has responsibility for creating the main program at each meeting. The Program Committee is charged with developing the Call for Session Proposals and the subsequent evaluation and selection of member meeting track sessions.
