Hi all,

I can’t believe TechEx is next week. It seems like just last month I was submitting the proposal for this tutorial session. I want to take a couple of paragraphs and share a few tidbits of information to hopefully make things go smoothly for our class.

  1. The tutorial will be held in room Oceana 4. It is scheduled to run from 8am-5pm on Monday, October 15th. Refreshment breaks for all tutorials will be held from 10:00-10:30am and 3:00-3:30pm in rooms Oceana 6 and 7. (This is the latest information I have, but please check the program guide app/website for up-to-date information.)
  2. My goal is that this will be a relaxed session, so feel free to come in whatever you find comfortable. I personally have no problem if you want to wear t-shirts and jeans or even shorts.
  3. You will need to have access to a Docker runtime environment. You have a few options:
    1. Use your own equipment:

                                                               i.      Install Docker for Mac/Windows: https://docs.docker.com/docker-for-mac/install/ or https://docs.docker.com/docker-for-windows/install/

ii.      Install on a Linux host: https://docs.docker.com/install/

    1. Use someone else’s: https://labs.play-with-docker.com/

                                                               i.      This runtime gives you servers for 4 hours blocks. Then they reset.

ii.      You have to have a Docker account to access the service.

Please note that for part of the exercises we will use the Play With Docker service (unless you want to spin up several Linux VMs that are on the same network and running Docker) and you WILL need a Docker account.

  1. We can use to communicate as a class before the class and after (for some unknown amount of time). If you have questions, feel free to send them to the list OR to me directly () if you need to keep it private.

Finally, I recently heard an interesting note. American’s usually start a presentation by sharing their experience and credentials thus validating why the audience should trust them. Europeans just assume that the presenter wouldn’t be presenting if they were not qualified and the presenters do a minimal introduction and tend to get into the meat of things. In that spirit, I’ll briefly introduce myself here. (Feel free to skip to the next paragraph.) I’m currently an identity and access management consultant/architect with Unicon. The short is I spend a lot of time helping client with open source CAS, Shibboleth, Grouper, and other closed source IAM applications. Before joining Unicon, I worked at Eastern Washington University working in IT doing all sorts of things from AD/MS-SQL/IIS/WebLogic administration to Banner programming as well as their IAM stuff. Related to Docker and DevOps in general, I’ve always had a strong desire for reproducible work. Whether it was server builds or application deployments. I started working with Docker in 2014. I’ve used Docker to deploy applications for Unicon as well as helped clients, such as School of Mines, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Georgia Tech, and Stetson University explore Docker. I’m the primary author of the TEIR Grouper Docker image and contributed to the TIER Shibboleth IdP image. I recently earned my Docker Certified Associate credential. Alright… enough about me.

I may send one more follow-up email with any final tidbits, but if not I’ll see you in Orlando on Monday!

Thanks,

John
