We had what I regard as a very successful initial meeting of DDX on Sunday. While writing up the minutes, it occurred to me that we were delinquent in dealing with an important administrative item.

This is the intellectual property regime for the activity. For those who haven't run into this before, it's important when working with lots of people from different places to have upfront agreement about how shared work can be used, trying to avoid nasty issues later involving lawyers and license fees and cease-and-desist orders and such. Internet2-based activities use a standard framework:

http://www.internet2.edu/membership/ip.html

I propose that we use the "Standard Approach" described on that page for DDX. While everyone should read what this says carefully and discuss it with their counsel, I'll summarize it as: anything produced or said in the context of the activity (meetings, mailing list, wiki, etc) is made freely available to all. If and when we get to the point of have real product, like reports and software, we will decide on ownership, but in any case those products will be freely available, under an open-source license if appropriate. If you have IPR on anything you want to contribute to the work, you need to disclose that up front so we can deal with it.

I think this is consistent with practice in other venues, eg IETF working groups.

This implies that the minutes from meetings, including the Sunday meeting, will be openly available via the mailing list archive and via the wiki.

If anyone has any objection to this, let me know real soon.
