Thanks. I saw it and was about to edit it when I found that for modern
versions of PAM one can add

session required pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/ umask=0022

to /etc/pam.d/common-session

and have PAM create the home directory automatically during the first login.

That is not what one would probably do for a large production system,
but it works great for a demo.
