Hello Diego, all,
First I'd like to propose adding Virtual Organizations to the 'Outreach'
item.
Second, I'd like to propose adding a new work-item: middleware platforms
for collaboration (working title).
The by now well established federated identity frameworks offer
unparalleled opportunities for securely enabling cross domain and cross
border collaboration. Such collaboration is prominent both within a pan
european context in VO's like Clarin and Lifewatch. We @SURFnet also see
this on a smaller, national scale where universities, polytechnics, but
also e.g. academic hospitals increasingly focus on collaboration over
the borders of their institution. We expect supporting VOs, both large
and small, to become a evermore important activity for NRENs, as these
are uniquely suited to operate over institutional borders in an
international context.
However, federated identity alone is not enough to support smooth
collaboration. Externalizing grouprelations, standardized provisioning
and deprovisioning, attribute exchange mechanisms, accessing remote,
perhaps cloud based, services, is just a small list of current
challenges that such collaborations face.
In an effort to better support these collaborations, a number of
initiatives have rising from either NRENs (Internet2, SURFnet, Switch,
among others) and also within Geant3, to work on investigating and
creating middleware platforms that can facilitate these collab efforts.
This workitem monitors, tracks and disseminates activities and progress
in these platforms, and tries to work on harmonizing these in regard to
open interfacing with federations and services. The workitem could also
take care of part of the outreach effort and could help in bringing the
needs and requirements of the VOs to our taskforce
The workitem clearly has many relations with other workitems already
part of TF-EMC2, as well as Refeds. I feel however it deserves it's own
workitem, both because of the growing importance of VOs for our
communities, as well as the fact that the VO requirements really push
the boundaries for a number (all?) of the other activities within TF-EMC2
I would love to hear any comments and suggestions on these proposals and
would very much welcome participation!
regards,
Niels
