Subject: technology scouting open collaboration infrastructure SURFnet

Dear mister Klingenstein,

Enabling collaboration across the boundaries of institutions is one of SURFnets priorities. In 2009 a comprehensive technology scouting will start looking into a new generation of open collaboration infrastructure (“Collaboration Infrastructure”) technology and generic middleware components for collaboration services (“Federated collaboratories”). The goal of SURFnets multi-year program is to develop an open middleware infrastructure for (e)science and educational collaboration services.

In the first half of 2009 the project seeks to lay the foundations for this infrastructure. The intended results of this part of the project are:

* A report on architecture and standards for Collaboration Infrastructure
* A report on services spanning federative group management
* A report on generic (federative) provisioning, deprovisioning and federative directory services

By involving an advisory committee and by closely monitoring international developments in these areas, the project team seeks to create an exchange of knowledge and ideas around these technologies
at an early stage in the project.

Furthermore, the advisory committee will participate in determining the scope and direction of the project as well as act as a quality assurance for the project team which consists of SURFnet staff and a number of external specialists.

The advisory committee consists of approximately ten people, and is formed by invitation only. We hereby kindly request if you would consider participating in the advisory committee.

Focus for the advisory committee will be a number of workshops (February / March 2009). In addition, the advisory will be asked to review (parts of) the various reports. We expect a total input of about three days in a period of half a year. We can use videoconferencing should you not be able to make it all the way to The Netherlands.

For more information, please contact Frank Pinxt (), Niels van Dijk () or Frank Hogenkamp (, project secretary).

Kind Regards,

Frank Hogenkamp
