As discussed on the call last Friday, our colleagues at OOI also mentioned 
these packages they're using or intending to use to support their large 
data-intensive environment:

RabbitMQ - http://www.rabbitmq.com/

Red Hat Enterprise MRG - http://www.redhat.com/mrg/
  "a next-generation IT infrastructure that makes enterprise computing
   100-fold faster"

Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS) - http://aws.amazon.com/sqs/
  "a reliable, highly scalable, hosted queue for storing messages as they
   travel between computers"

OPeNDAP - http://www.opendap.org/
  "makes local data accessible to remote locations regardless of local
   storage format"

I have no idea whether notions of individual user access control would 
apply in their deployment of these packages (or why they seem to need so 
many apparently similar services).  But there they are FYI.
