Colleagues,

Apologies for bombarding your inbox this evening. I’m leaving in the morning for a conference and just getting things out the door before I go. I want to get two things on your radar and then I’ll get one of them on your calendar. Hopefully the other one is already there.

  1. NET+ AWS Tech Share – On Wednesday we hold our bi-weekly Tech Share. As usual there is not a set agenda, everyone just brings their questions, ideas, challenges, and issues and we discuss them with each other and a cast of smarties from AWS. This week, however, Internet2 is bringing one of its own smarties at the request of the group at the Tech Share two weeks ago. There were questions about networking best practices for keeping costs low when dealing with third-party services so we went straight to the big gun himself, Scott Taylor instructor of Networking in the Cloud and four-time winner of Best Networked Engineer from Cloud Proud magazine. You won’t want to miss this discussion!
  • What: NET+ AWS Tech Share
  • Who: Cloud enablement, developers, networking engineers, security, basically any who works with cloud at your institution and wants to talk shop with their peers
  • When: Wednesday, April 9 at 8am PDT/11am EDT
  • Where: https://internet2.zoom.us/j/89225081881

NOTE: Please practice good meeting manners. Display your first and last name as well as your institution on the call.

  1. NET+ AWS Town Hall: Ingredients for a Successful Modern Data Strategy – The April Town Hall came together as a result of discussions in the NET+ AWS Service Advisory Board and on a couple of Tech Shares. When asked to come up with areas of interest for training or deeper discussion, data lakes and data management were frequent requests. Well, interesting challenges and ideas are like catnip to Kevin Murakoshi. (Here I imagine Kevin rolling on the floor with the idea, purring as he contemplates who to call, batting it around, getting it stuck under the couch, etc.)

As usual, Kevin found a ringer. This time it’s someone who loves to talk about all things data. He has invited Dallas Maddox, Business Development Manager for Higher Education Data Analytics Strategy at AWS, to tell us all about it. You may know Dallas from such hit shows as:
  • ETL & Me (A quirky buddy comedy about an overwhelmed analyst and her overly literal AI assistant.)
  • Governance (the Severance knock-off)
  • Single Source of Truth (Twenty data sources enter. Only one will be trusted.)
  • America’s Next Top Data Model
  • Data Lake Island (Attractive datasets are dropped into a tropical data lake and must make themselves queryable or be archived forever. Sparks fly when JSON meets CSV.)
  • and, of course, Dallas

Needless to say, you won’t want to miss this one!

  • What: NET+ AWS Town Hall
  • Who: Cloud enablement, data analysts, professionals involved in data and cloud governance, those who want to learn to build their own data lakes
  • When: Wednesday, April 23 at 11am PDT/2pm EDT
  • Where: Register here

NOTE: Please practice good meeting manners. Display your first and last name as well as your institution on the call.

I hope you can join us. Every call, every conversation is better when you (yes, I mean you) are there!
