Did you know New Year’s Day isn’t universally celebrated on January 1st? While the Gregorian calendar—widely used today—marks January 1st as the start of the year, many cultures celebrate their own New Year on different dates. Traditions like Chinese New Year, Islamic New Year, Tamil New Year (Puthandu), and Rosh Hashanah follow lunar or lunisolar calendars, making their dates movable. Historically, even in medieval Europe, New Year’s Day varied, falling on dates like March 25 (Lady Day) or December 25. It wasn’t until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar that January 1st became the standard for most of the world.
